Principal's Letter

To the Class of 2002:

It's hard to believe that we have completed our four years together. It seems like only yesterday that we were in the gym, meeting for the first time, and preparing to begin our Rice careers together. I can recall challenging you at that time to set your goal to graduate from Rice Memorial High School. Well, there were 143 of you in that room that day and not all would make it to graduation four years later, but those of you who did have grown in so many ways. You have made many positive contributions to this school; in your academic achievements, the championships won in athletic competitions, the growth of our music program, and the countless hours of unselfish service to your community. Speaking on behalf of the entire school, we are all so very proud of your efforts.

You have witnessed many significant changes over your four years. You experienced a significant tuition increase, a longer school day and year, changes in the dress code, red cards, new rules and regulations, three assistant principals and more. You also witnessed more senior privileges, increased course offerings, newer technology, the growth of the fine and performing arts, new athletic teams and activities, etc. Some of these changes you would view as positive, while others may have annoyed you. Whatever the feeling, you have learned a valuable lesson in life - the ability to cope with change. As you move on through life, you will encounter changer wherever you go. Those who can best adapt to change will thrive, while those who can't will simply be left behind.

The tragedy you experienced on September 11th will certainly be with you for the rest of your life. It is one of those events you will always remember where you were and who you were with. You will remember that you were in a classroom at Rice High School, among teachers and friends who cared for you, and always will. You will remember that the whole school paused for prayer, and that God was with us at that time, and always will be. You will remember the feeling of fear that life would never quite be the same, and yet you felt comfort and safety in being in a safe place.

You are now leaving Rice High School, but in reality Rice High School will never leave you. Remember life's lessons learned while here. Be patient, kind, loving, and forgiving. Help those less fortunate and find some way to be a positive contributor to your community. Above all, remain faithful to God, for it is through His lessons that you will find true comfort and peace in life.

I wish you all success and happiness in whatever life brings your way. Don't forget us at Rice because we will never for you. God Bless.
